The Inventor & his Invention
Cornelius van Drebbel
The submarine was first created when William Bourne, a British mathematician, drew a diagram of it in about the year 1580. Cornelius van Drebbel, a Dutch inventor, built the first working submarine in 1620. Although Bourne drew the machine he did not actually build it. Therefore Drebbel is usually credited for inventing the submarine.
Drebbel 's submarine followed the same structural format as Bourne's but with a few modifications. It was powered by oarsman to propel itself both on top of and under the water. When the submarine was trialed at Thames River it was approximately 4 to 5 feet in depth under the surface of the water.

Why?
A submarine being used for oceanography
People had always been trying to create a machine that could not only float on water but also travel underwater. Finally the submarine was invented, allowing people to explore and search for sunken treasures. During World Wars I and II submarines were used successfully.
Currently submarines are used for various purposes. They are especially helpful when people are studying oceanography*. Safety procedures are also in place for crew members and any passengers on board in case of an emergency.
*Oceanography is the study of the physical appearance of the ocean.
