Evolving for War
John P. Holland
For many countries the submarine was an easy way to approach enemies during wars without being noticed. That is why the submarines play big roles in wars.
Submarines were first used in war during World War I when John P. Holland designed and built one for the U.S. Navy. When his submarines were fit for war, the U.S. navy brought 24 diesel powered submarines into the war. Germany also had submarines equipped for war and used them for their purpose.

A German u-boat
During World War II German u-boats (submarines) traveled underwater as groups. These groups were called "wolf packs". The submarines in these "wolf packs" disturbed shipping routes.
